Frequently Asked Questions about Beeja & our products
What does “sprouted” or activated” actually mean?
Sprouting nuts and seeds activates them. This essentially means they have begun the next steps of their life, which is to become a plant or tree. We do this to reduce phytic acid, a natural preservative in all seeds. This increases bioavailability and allows our body to absorb most of the nutrients with more ease.
How is it different from regular nuts/seeds?
Raw nuts have all the nutrients intact, yet they will fight against your digestive system. They don’t want to be consumed, they want to become a plant. Roasted nuts are easier to digest, but that is because they have been neutralised. They are no longer a living food; they can still be consumed for their macronutrients and are a great snack. Sprouted nuts and seeds are in the sweet spot in between. Most of the nutrients are still intact and available for absorption while having an incredible crunch.
Is it raw or dehydrated? At what temperature?
Our nuts and seeds are not raw. We do a slow and long dehydration that lasts for 2 days most times. However, the temperature exceeds 48°C crossing the raw threshold while still being low enough for our purpose: To bring the nuts and seeds to their highest possible form for human consumption.
Are they organic? certified or just claimed?
We are a clean label brand. This means being transparent about our exact ingredients and processes. If we were to source organic raw materials we’d need to know with absolute certainty that they are indeed organic. The market is filled with fraud, and we aren’t going to be a part of it.
What does the sprouting process look like step-by-step?
Over 2 and a half days go into sprouting each batch of nuts and seeds. We start with raw nuts that are segregated and washed with purified water. They are then soaked in mildly salted water in a dark space for 2 to 14 hours. Finally, they are dehydrated after another thorough rinse for up to 2 days.
What specific benefits do I get?
Nuts and seeds, whether raw, roasted or sprouted, are an essential staple in our diet. Excellent source of fats, fibre, micronutrients like magnesium, zinc, selenium, etc. Sprouting ensures the micronutrients are more easily absorbed.
Is there any scientific backing to “enhanced nutrition”?
Yes, it is talked about in Ayurveda, and science has proved it. As a rule of thumb, any time both ayurveda and science agree on something, it's worth looking into.
If it’s “activated”, how is shelf life 6 months?
We ensure that we have a loss of 5 g per 100 g of raw nuts and seeds when we dehydrate. This matters because moisture is where microbial activity starts, and by ensuring we dehydrate for longer, we reduce spoilage by drying beyond where we started. This process also brings an incredible crunch!
Are any preservatives used?
No.
Who is this good for (gut health? protein? detox?)
Everyone, but those who lead active lifestyles will benefit the most as their bodies will partition the nutrients absorbed more easily.
When should I eat it ( Morning? pre-workout? fasting?)
Best in the morning, but good anytime. Morning consumption is ideal as our bodies have a gauge for nutrients ingested throughout the day. The earlier in the day we consume all the essential nutrients the earlier our body relaxes, reducing cortisol and hunger pangs at night.
Why is it priced higher compared to other nut / seed products in the market?
Our process is labour and equipment-heavy. Combining that with small batch capacities means we cannot compete with commodities.
