Frequently Asked Questions about The Colours of Nature & our products
What makes The Colours of Nature products unique?
Our products use only natural dyes derived from plants, roots, bark,
flowers, and minerals. Each piece is crafted in small batches, making
every colour slightly unique. We focus on slow, mindful production that
respects both people and the environment. We have been in Auroville
since 1993, starting with the revival of the 100% natural indigo
fermentation process. Many claim to be natural, but they are not. We
test every batch we receive from our nearby suppliers.
What materials do you use?
We primarily use natural fibres such as organic cotton and other
plant-based textiles. These materials are breathable, skin-friendly, and
work beautifully with natural dyes.
What natural dyes do you use?
Our colours come from nature—such as indigo for blues, madder for reds,
myrobalan and jackfruit sawdust for yellows, and iron for greys and
blacks. These dyes are carefully prepared using traditional methods.
How are your products different from regular clothing?
Unlike conventional clothing, which often uses synthetic dyes and
chemicals, our products are coloured using natural processes. This means
softer tones, subtle variations, and a lower environmental impact. The
garments feel different too—more breathable and gentle on the skin.
Are your products organic or certified?
Where possible, we use certified organic materials. Our dyeing processes
are natural and non-toxic. As a small-scale, craft-based production,
not all products carry formal certification, but we prioritise
transparency and ecological responsibility in every step.
How should I care for naturally dyed products?
We recommend gentle care:
- Colour may bleed before the first 1-3 washes; wash before wear or use
- Hand wash or machine wash on a mild cycle
- Use mild, pH-neutral detergents (preferably eco-friendly)
- Wash separately or with similar colours
- Dry in the shade to preserve colour
Natural dyes evolve over time, and slight fading is part of their beauty.
Will the colours fade or change over time?
Our products are the result of close collaboration between farmers,
dyers, and artisans. The dyeing process is time-intensive, involving
multiple steps like mordanting, dye extraction, and repeated dipping or
soaking. Each piece reflects skilled, hands-on work, including hand
embroidery.
