The township of Auroville is known in India for its unique concept and way of living. You might have heard of it with regard to sustainable living, integral education, a moneyless economy and unique decision making, but what does this really mean for one’s everyday life?
With many things to explore and people to meet, the City of Dawn deserves more than a passing glance. Are you interested in meeting people who have been living and working in Auroville over the past years? How about exploring the hidden parts of the city? In collaboration with Inside India, auroville.com offers a unique opportunity to explore the universal township on a deeper level. On a three-day tour, you will meet Aurovilians who run companies, plant trees, harvest organic crops and are active in the organizational structure of the city.

What you will explore;

Introduction.

Auroville was founded over 50 years ago – how was it started? What lies at its foundation? And how has it evolved over time? These are some of the questions that will answered in an introduction session where the history of Auroville, the city’s aims and ideals as well as the spiritual foundation will be explained.

Organization.

A knowledgeable Aurovilian will give you a brief introduction about the organization of the city, how it is structured, and its decision making strategies. The composition of the different working groups along with their tasks will be explained. We will explore the relationship of Auroville to other organizations, and the Government of India with regard to the Auroville Foundation Act 1988.

Economy.

The economy of Auroville has several rather unique and intriguing features, especially because Auroville is a place for experiments; the relationship between service oriented activities and commercial activities are explored extensively. One of the declared aims of Auroville is to create a society without the exchange of money. What would that look like? Are we as humans ready for this? And what is the driving force for building businesses if the income for the unit holders doesn't increase?  These are just some questions which we will explore.

Environment.

Living sustainably is a big aspect of everyday life in Auroville. Putting up quite a struggle in the late sixties and early seventies, the first Aurovilians planted trees transforming a barren plateau into a vibrant forest filled with wildlife. Organic and alternative farming are being practiced with the aim to a self-sustainable life. Furthermore, aspects of life such as waste management, conscious consumption and renewable energy are constantly being discussed in Auroville. We will look at these topics with experts from different fields.
