The destiny of planet Earth, and therefore of humankind, has once more become the focus of worldwide concern and fear because of certain interpretations of the Mayan calendar. This time the negative predictions, announcing the end of the world on December 21, 2012, find strong support in the general conditions of our planet (cf. the Gaia theory) which may lead to an irreversible catastrophe in the foreseeable future. The positive expectations predict a sudden, spectacular change in the constitution of the human personality.
A coherent explanation of this time of crisis and confusion is to be found in the worldview and the Work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Their aim was the appearance of a new consciousness which would bring about the next, higher step in the terrestrial evolution. The Mother announced the manifestation of the new consciousness in 1956. The changes required by the materialization of this consciousness would be the cause of the present global acceleration, urgency and disorientation. What happens in December 2012 — ifanything happens — will then be another phenomenon in the great turnabout humanity has been continually subject to in the last decennia.
