The Mother

Founded in 1968 by The Mother (Mirra Alfassa, fr., 1878 – 1973), Auroville is inhabited nowadays by about 1600 women, men and children from all over the globe (800 indians), who work and live together, participating in a unique and extremely interesting collective inner and outer experiment, trying to realise an effective human unity.

At the very core of Auroville, work is heading towards finishing of the Matrimandir,

an entirely symbolic and powerful meditation and transformation/purification centre for the whole human being.

Symbolically, the building means the golden consciousness
rising out of the sleeping and unconscious matter, aspiring towards the truth-consciousness, symbolized by the golden sun above.

Inside of the Matrimandir, the Inner Chamber receives a permanent ray of (sun)light, beaming onto a unique perfect
globe (70cm diameter) of massive glass, symbolizing the soul.
